Once again St. Lucie residents are being asked to shell out more of their hard earned money to support a poorly managed school system.
As usual, you will hear that the increase is only the cost of a pizza each month and the benefits of that pizza are just never-ending. They talk about teacher pay increases, school safety, mental health, music programs, physical education, other important programs. All good things but we’ve heard it all before. When does it stop?
It is time for some hard facts. They’ve failed us, they’ve failed the children, and they will continue to fail us because as we know, an addict never quits after just one more fix.
Will Teachers Have a Pay Cut in 4 Years?
Temporary Tax a Poorly Conceived Quick Fix
The tax everyone is being asked to approve is only a temporary tax for four years. What happens in four years you ask. Will teacher pay be cut? Will the St Lucie School District fix their broken and bloated budget? Or will they ask you to make permanent what they’re promsing is only temporary? The obvious answer is there will be another very costly election to make this temporary tax increase permanent. A forever burden on the backs of St Lucie residents.

Teachers and Children Used as Weapons
When was the last time you heard that if you didn’t vote for a tax administrators wouldn’t get their pay raise?
The administrators at St Lucie School District never miss out, never go without. I’m sure they don’t have to go into their pocket for office supplies. It’s the teachers and students that are used as emotional weapons. Is there fear that administrators with lots of experience are going to run to Martin County for better pay? No. Why not? If I were a teacher I’d storm the district and demand that they stop using me and the students as political pawns.

The School District has said that because such measures have passed in Martin County we need to pass such measures here to compete for the best teachers.
What They Mean
Teacher pay has always been an issue in St. Lucie County. It can be assumed that if Martin County did not pass a resolution then teachers in St. Lucie would never get a pay increase.
